These bowls have been carved for centuries in Scandinavia. A traditional utilitarian design but occasionally decorated by carving and painting for more ceremonial use. The bowls were traditionally carved with the center of the tree (pith) on the top. That made for a larger capacity bowl from any given log. The two bowls pictured reflect the two syles of carving.
